Students to enjoy discount fares
KUALA LUMPUR: Students are advised to apply for a Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad (KTMB) i-card before Jan 7 to enjoy 50% discount on KTM Komuter fares.
KTMB president Lt Col (Rt) Sarbini Tijan said previously only school students were entitled to apply for the card.
"Now, all students including primary, secondary, college, university and foreign students are entitled to register," he told reporters after announcing the train fares for KTM Komuter in the Klang Valley, today.
"Currently, students can enjoy 50% off by showing their student card at the ticket counter," he said, adding that on Jan 7 students would have to show the card.
Sarbini said the card is a control measure to prevent the abuse of the new fare structure by students who have already graduated.
He said students must obtain a letter of consent from their school principal before applying for the card.
Students can get the application form from the KTMB ticketing counter at KL Sentral Station, Level 2 with an annual fee of RM30 or download the form from the KTMB website www.ktmb.com.my
On Nov 2, KTMB announced that the train fares for KTM Komuter in the Klang Valley will increase from 11 sen to 15 sen per km, an average 36% increase, with effect from Dec 2.
Sarbini said the new fare structure caters only for the Klang Valley sector, from Tanjung Malim to Sungai Gadut and Batu Caves to Port Klang.
"KTMB will increase its fare to the maximum RM7.10 per trip, an average increase of four sen per km," he said.
