Slight increase in number of flood victims in Melaka, Negeri Sembilan and Johor

    KUALA LUMPUR: There was a slight increase in the number of victims evacuated in Malacca, Negeri Sembilan and Johor this morning due to the floods.
    In Malacca, the number of victims sheltered at 13 evacuation centres in three districts in the state rose to 4,600 from 1,005 families as at 8 o'clock this morning compared with 4,317 victims from 956 families at 8 pm last night.
    The Malacca Director of the Malaysian Civil Defence Department (JPAM) Lt Col (CD) Effendy Ali said of the total, 3,020 victims were sheltered at six evacuation centres in the Malacca Tengah district, followed by Alor Gajah district with 1,560 victims in six evacuation centres and the Jasin district with 24 victims at one relief centre.
    "The number of victims at the 13 relief centres rose due to the rain which occurred in the state last night causing several areas to be flooded," he said when contacted by Bernama, here today.
    He said that in the Malacca Tengah district, 2,252 victims were being placed at the Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Munshi Abdullah, Sekolah Kebangsaan Kerubong (402 victims), Kompleks Penghulu Tampoi (152), Masjidul Rahman Tanah Merah Kerubong (127), Sekolah Rendah Jenis Kebangsaan Cina Malim (44) and Sekolah Rendah Agama Bertam Malim (43).
    In the Alor Gajah district, 561 victims were placed at Sekolah Kebangsaan Belimbing Dalam, Balai Raya Taman Seri Bayu (498), Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Seri Pengkalan (271), Sekolah Kebangsaan Gangsa (149), Balai Raya Kampung Beringin (49) and Balai Raya Bukit Balai (32).
    Effendy Ali said 24 victims were sheltered at Sekolah Kebangsaan Chohong in Jasin.
    Meanwhile in Seremban, there was a slight increase in the number of victims from 657 (166 families) from the whole state last night to 662 victims this morning.
    Negeri Sembilan JPAM director, Lt Col (CD) Kamal Mokhtar said in a statement that as at 8 am, the number of relief centres in the district remained at six.
    He said 589 victims were placed at Sekolah Kebangsaan (F) Sungai Kelamah; Masjid Sungai Dua (15); Balai Raya Parit Buloh, Air Kuning (21); Balai Raya Sungai Kelamah (18); Balai Raya Kampung Ladang, Gemas (four) and Sekolah Kebangsaan Kampong Ladang (15).
    So far, no casualty had been reported while the Gemenceh-Gemas road which was fully repaired was expected to be open to all vehicles at 5 pm.
    In Muar, the number of victims in Johor in the morning increased to 126 involving 32 families who were evacuated to three relief centres in the Tangkak district.
    Tangkak district JPAM officer Mohd Shahrizan Abd Aziz said the number of victims in the Tangkak district rose to 21 from three families.
    "The number of victims today increased compared to the 105 victims from 29 families who were evacuated yesterday," he said when contacted today.
    He said there was no new evacuation centre opened besides the ones already opened namely Sekolah Kebangsaan Sialang and Sekolah Agama Bandar Tangkak.
    "All the victims were from Kampung Seberang Gajah, Kampung Sialang Dalam, Kampung Tanjong Laboh and Kampung Sri Makmur," said Mohd Shahrizan.
    Meanwhile, a spokesman of the Segamat District Disaster Management Committee said the number of victim in the district remained at 21 sheltered at the Balai Raya Kampung Awat. — Bernama
