KUALA LUMPUR: The Communications and Multimedia Ministry (KKMM) through the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) warned news portals to be responsible with their reporting or they will face action under the law.
Its deputy minister, Datuk Jailani Johari, said any party which posts irresponsible content will face action by the MCMC and police as well.
"Any party that spreads or posts irresponsible content, whether it is derogatory or to cause provocation, I believe the commission and the police will take appropriate action in accordance with the law," he said.
He advised internet users to tread with caution and be responsible for the statements they share or write.
"We don't want certain parties to spread controversial and false news without knowing the damage and impact caused," he said.
He said that most online portals favour controversial and sensational news to attract more hits to their site.
"It is human nature to ignore stories that are good, but when it comes to the sensational news, they love to read it. So my warning to all parties is not to spread stories that are slanderous in nature because the authorities will not hesitate to take action," he told the media after launching the new season of "Gerak Khas" 2016 at the Finas studios in Hulu Kelang today.
He said that if there is clear proof on those who are spreading theses stories, then they would face the full brunt of the law.
