Yunnan province hopes to increase trade with Malaysia through agricultural links

GEORGE TOWN: Yunnan province in China hopes to increase trade with Malaysia through commercial links in the agriculture sector.
Its Department of Commerce deputy Director-General Ma Yongfu said trade between them was about US$120million (RM466million) annually.
The province mainly exported fresh flowers, agriculture produce and daily necessities to the country while receiving oil palm and rubber products from Malaysia.
He hoped that Yunnan business can tap the Malaysian agriculture market as the country has fertile soil which was good for crops.
He said the province in turn was very experienced in the agriculture sector, noting farming activities had been going on for a long time there.
"The agriculture sector here can tap into our vast experience in farming," he said when calling on Deputy Chief Minister I Datuk Rashid Hasnon today.
Rashid welcomed the intention and said he will be leading a delegation of Penang business to participate in the Fourth China-South Asia Exposition from June 12 to 17.
He said details will be worked out soon and hoped to be able to showcase Penang food, halad food, small medium industries (SMI) and small medium enterprises (SME) during the fair.
On a separate matter later, Rashid urged the public to be generous to assist 10-year-old Choo Kye Hern obtain a prosthetic leg.
The standard four pupil lost his right leg below the knee after the limb was amputated due to nerve tumors (neurofibroma).
The prosthetic limb is estimated to be about RM15,000, including the maintenance costs for two years.
