KUALA LUMPUR: Police have formed a special task force to investigate 1 Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) following a thorough examination of the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) report on the government strategic investment company.
Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar said it was set up last Thursday and is led by him with officers from Bukit Aman Commercial Crime Investigation Department (CCID) and Criminal Investigation Department (CID).
He added they have resumed the investigations and have opened investigation papers (IP) under the Penal Code for criminal breach of trust and cheating.
"We have called in a few people to record their statements, while more will be called in including 1MDB former chief executive officer Datuk Shahrol Azral Ibrahim Halmi. The results of our investigations will then forwarded to the Attorney-General’s Chamber,” he told reporters after launching a blood donation event in conjunction with the 209th Police Day at the Malaysian Police Training Centre (PULAPOL) here today.
He declined to comment when asked for the names of those called in by police so far.
But he said police will examine if there were any criminal elements present in its investigation and "if it was only violation of company procedures, the offence would fall under the Companies Act.”
Police have taken the recommendations made by PAC to look into all of the issues raised in the report, which was tabled in Parliament last week, he added.
He said he was instructed by the cabinet to conduct an investigation.
On April 7, PAC revealed that 1MDB’s board of directors had failed to fulfill their responsibility and protect the interests of the company and its shareholders. It also said the directors did not take appropriate action or be proactive in scrutinising the management's activities and cash flow.
