KUCHING: Datuk Seri Douglas Uggah Embas, who is tipped to be Deputy Chief Minister if he wins in Bukit Saban, said he would not be concentrating only on the seat assigned to him in the Sarawak election.

The Plantation Industries and Commodities Minister said: "My priority is not only to triumph in Bukit Saban but also to ensure Sarawak Barisan Nasional win with big and fully convincing majorities (across the state).

"So one of my tasks is to assist other BN candidates win big ... We want a strong mandate for our Chief Minister (Tan Sri Adenan Satem)."

He said BN was still the popular choice as government in Malaysia, and the state election would reflect this.

Uggah is a seven-term Member of Parliament for Betong, of which Bukit Saban is a part.

Pressed on his likely appointment as Deputy Chief Minister, he said: "We have a hierarchy in PBB. Tan Sri Alfred Jabu Numbang (who is stepping down as Deputy Chief Minister) is deputy president of the party, and I am a senior vice president. That's why they are bringing me back."

Asked if he felt he could serve the community better as an assemblyman, Uggah said he had been taking care of the interests of the constituents as MP.

"In the system we have, whether at federal or state level and with both governments, we serve everyone with the policy of inclusiveness.
"We like to see all races prosper in our beloved Malaysia. I do my part to find ways in line with the Chief Minister's philosophy of development to prosper Sarawakians irrespective of race and religion. That is a very important philosophy that we must uphold," he said.
