Cops arrest more over Movida pub grenade attack

KUALA LUMPUR: Police have confirmed that they have made more arrests in connection with the hand grenade attack on the Movida pub in Puchong recently.
"We have made some arrests, even today we have made arrests pertaining to the investigation and we will release a statement soon," Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar said at the Police Special Branch Hari Raya open house at Bukit Aman today.
The June 28 explosion at Movida at IOI Boulevard, which injured eight people, was carried out by locals who were taking orders from Daesh (IS) militant Muhamad Wanndy Mohamad Jedi from Syria.
When asked if security has been beefed up since the IS threat, Khalid said that security had been stepped up and they have identified target areas which may be under threat.
"We have stepped up our security presence in all locations, especially places that are concentrated with many people and also places which we believe may be a target of the IS militants," he said.
He added that the threat of the IS has not only been confined to Malaysia but also neighbouring countries such as Indonesia and Philippines.
"They (the IS) didn't only declare a threat to Malaysia but to Philippines and Indonesia. They made the Southern Philippines their base. What can we do? They want to announce that. Let them announce. We will take care of our interests, our country's security, our people," he said.
"As a leader who takes care of national security, we expect all this is nothing new to us. So don't worry too much about it," he added.
Meanwhile, on a separate issue of a home-made bomb found on a railway track in Sentul last Wednesday, Khalid said this was an inside job and ruled out, as he had done earlier, the prospect of it being a terrorist attack.
"No arrests have been made but we are investigating it. It is more of an inside job," he said.
A police bomb disposal unit recovered the bomb which was made from a small plastic water bottle and contained a combustible substance commonly found in fireworks, shards of glass and ball bearings.
