Insurance agent claims trial for forced labour charge

KLUANG: An insurance agent claimed trial at the Sessions Court here today for allegedly exploiting a female Indian national by forcing her into forced labour.
P. P. Kavitha, 37, from Kulai, was charged under Section 12 of the Anti-Trafficking in Persons and Anti-Smuggling of Migrants Act 2007, which was read together with Section 34 of the Penal Code.
The charge carries a jail term up to 15 years and fine upon conviction.
She allegedly committed the offence with her sister by exploiting India national Jothi Ramalingam, 46, into forced labour at Taman Intan, Kluang on Dec 22, 2015.
Sessions Court judge Rohatul Akmal set bail at RM10,000 in one surety.
She also fixed Aug 2 for re-mention of the case.
The accused was represented by lawyer Ramesh Vasan.
DPP Norashikin Ibrahim prosecuted.
