PETALING JAYA: The Customs Department has warned businesses not to charge customers the Goods and Services Tax (GST) without the department's approval.
Its Federal Territory director Datuk Abd Gani Othman said although a business may have registered with the department, they can't charge the tax unless they have reached the RM500,000 sales threshold.
"The public should be aware that not all businesses have the right to charge GST. They must look out for the sticker from the department that allows a business to charge GST," he said.
He told theSun that several businesses were caught charging the tax even though they have not reached the threshold.
Earlier Abd Gani presented gifts to participants of the "Jom Minta Resit GST" programme at the department's headquarters here today.
He said under series two of the programme, 473 people from the Federal Territories were selected to receive various types of gifts.
In his speech he said there was a 25% increase in participation compared with the first series.
He said the department received 195,690 receipts from those who participated in the programme.
He said 2,876 people nationwide won gifts such handphones and electrical items after they registered on www.myresistgst.com.my.
Abd Gani said the public will not be charged for participating in the programme.
He said those who wish to participate in the programme can register on www.myresistgst.com.my.
