Johor DAP assemblymen's motion to discuss zika virus rejected

JOHOR BARU: An opposition assemblyman's emergency motion to discuss the threat of the zika virus was rejected at the state assembly sitting today.
The motion proposed Jimmy Puah Wee Tse (pix) (PKR – Bukit Batu) was rejected after 18 opposition assemblymen voted in favour while 36 Barisan Nasional representatives voted against it.
Earlier, before voting commenced, Speaker Tan Sri Mohamad Aziz said the state government took a serious view of the matter.
Absent from today's session was Johor Health and Environment committee chairman Datuk Ayub Rahmat and Agriculture And Agro-based Industry committee chairman Ismail Mohamed
In calling for an emergency motion to discuss the virus threat, Pua cited the case of the 27-year-old pregnant woman in Johor Baru who tested positive for the zika virus, the first such case in the country involving a pregnant woman.
On Wednesday, Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr S. Subramaniam said the woman, who lives with her husband in Taman Desa Harmoni, has been admitted to a public hospital there and would be treated accordingly.
