KUALA MUDA: The shoreline of Kuala Muda is fast disappearing and with it the popular picnic sites.
Fishermen near the popular "Pasar Bisik" think its a unique phenomena as its happening only at Kuala Muda which is located along Penang-Kedah border.
Fisherman Daud Karim, 75 said he realised the beach was slowly disappearing two months ago and attributed it to strong currents during the transition period of monsoon season in late July.
"I believe It is due to the strong currents and it happens once in seven years", he said, adding that he has been a fisherman since a young boy and is concerned with the phenomenon.
"In less than two months the beach has vanished and who knows what will happen next," he lamented.
His colleague Rohaizad Ahmad, 37, hopes the authorities will do something to overcome this phenomenon which some claim could be due to land reclamation works.
He suggested measures to to prevent the natural sand migration in the area.
He called for jetties to be built to help the fisherman to dock their boats easily in case the beach near the market disappears.
A source told theSun the beach used to be about 50m to 80m wide.
Visitor Mohd Ridzuan Azmi, 3,7 said he was shocked to see the beach gone as it used to be their picnic spot.
Seberang Prai Fisherman Association chairman Mahadi Mohd Rodzi urged fishermen to dock their boats at the designated area just a few metres from the market.
