LIMA: Peruvian officials reported two new oil spills in the country's Amazon on Sunday, bringing this year's total to seven.
Both spills happened in the northern Loreto region, one on Saturday in the Andoas district and the other on Sunday in the Urarinas district, the Agency for Environmental Appraisal and Audits (OEFA) said in statements posted on Twitter.
Special staff are investigating whether each of the companies responsible for the two sites — Pacific Stratus Energy of Peru SA and state-owned Petroperu — followed contingency plans.
They are also assessing the environmental impact the spills may have caused.
Indigenous communities have been the population most affected by spills, which restrict water supply and damage farmland. — AFP
