Movie Review - Ouija: Origin of Evil

THE film takes place in 1965 and focuses on Alice Zander (Elizabeth Reaser), who is having a tough time facing the death of her husband in a freak accident, emotionally and financially.
She has to look after her two daughters, teenage Lina Zander (Annalise Basso) and nine- year-old Doris Zander (Lulu Wilson).
She becomes a fortune teller, holding séances for people to contact their deceased loved ones. It’s all a scam, however, as she gets her daughters to help her with the effects.
Alice decides to buy a Ouija board for her act, but instead draws some real spirits, who use Doris to interpret their words and emotions. Alice is convinced one of the spirits is her late husband Roger Zander (Michael Weaver).
Lina finds the whole situation to be spooky, and notices Doris is changing for the worse.
Lina is convinced the spirits are out to bring harm to her mother and her sister. She gets the help from her headmaster, a priest named Father Tom Hogan (Henry Thomas).
The priest investigates and finds the house that the family is staying in was used for a dark and sinister purpose in WWII.
The spirits are angry that someone wants to take Doris away from them, and so begins a battle between good and evil to save the girl.
This film got some rave reviews in the US. A few even found this film to be an absolute shocker. But I found the plot to be tame and predictable.
The same old formula being used to create fear - a child being possessed by an evil spirit, and a frightened priest who must save her. I can almost predict what the next scene will be.
Hollywood really needs to put on its thinking cap and find fresher plots, and better twists to its stories.
The only good thing from Ouija: Origin of Evil is that the actors churn out some convincing performances.
