AirAsia to fly to Maldives?

PETALING JAYA: AirAsia Bhd group CEO Tan Sri Tony Fernandes surprised everyone, including even the airline, last week when he tweeted that the low-cost carrier will be flying to Male, the Maldives.
Last Wednesday, Fernandes tweeted that AirAsia will take over the route discontinued by Air Asia X Bhd on March 1, 2014.
He even gave away a couple of tickets to the recently axed destination to a couple for their second honeymoon.
"AirAsia will take over AirAsia X's route and continue route to Maldives. Gave away Nagoya and Chennai ticket. Who wants to go to Maldives?" he tweeted.
However, no official announcement has been made on AirAsia regarding the Male route. A check with the airline's spokesperson also did not shed light on whether a announcement on the new route for AirAsia is due.
A check on AsiaAsia's official website indicated that flights to Male will begin from March 30, 2014, with flight number and departure time. However, attempts to make bookings were unsuccessful, with the response showing that flights are "unavailable"..
Flights between Kuala Lumpur and Maldives take about 4 hours and 5 minutes, just slightly over AirAsia's own flight hours, which is limited to 4 hours. AirAsia X flies between four and eight hours currently.
AirAsia X had announced that it would be suspending services to Male from Mar 1, 2014 citing challenging business conditions.
The long-haul budget carrier said that it would refund passengers affected by the suspension. It also gave them an option to reroute to another AirAsia X destination or a rebook of a return flight prior to Feb 28. All changes could be made at no additional cost.
It is not if known if AirAsia X passengers who hold bookings to Male after Mar 1 will be given seats on AirAsia if it starts flying into the islands in the Indian Ocean.
