KUALA LUMPUR: The government is targeting to create a Senior Citizen Activity Centre (Pawe) in every Parliamentary constituency in four years' time.
Women, Family and Community Development Minister, Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail said currently there were 59 such centres throughout the country with the total number of registered senior citizens at 36,000.
"Another 30 units of Pawe were in the process of being set up, raising the number of such centres throughout the country to 89 by the end of the year," she said when winding up the debate on the motion of thanks for the Royal Address for the ministry at the Dewan Rakyat sitting today.
Dr Wan Azizah, who is also the Deputy Prime Minister, said such centres set up by the ministry through the Social Welfare Department (JKM) aimed to assist the senior citizens to be involved in activities together with the local community.
She said the ministry also welcomed non-governmental organisations (NGOs) to be involved in creating daily activity centres for senior citizens in strategic and suitable areas. — Bernama
