Adam Adli acquitted

PUTRAJAYA: The Court of Appeal today acquitted activist Adam Adli on a charge of making an allegedly seditious speech at a rally in 2013.
A three-man bench led by Justice Datuk Mohd Zawawi Salleh and comprising Datuk Abdul Rahman Sebli and Datuk Kamardin Hashim, allowed Adam Adli's appeal to set aside his conviction on the sedition charge and RM5,000 fine.
Mohd Zawawi said it was the court's view that there were many misdirection of law by the Sessions Court judge rendering Adam Adli's conviction unsafe.
"The defendant was convicted under Section 4(1)(b) of the Sedition Act 1948, but was later called to enter his defence under Section 3(a), 3(c), 3(d), and 3(e). This acute misdirection of the law had caused the conviction to become unsafe, as the charge is not related to the offence," said Mohd Zawawi.
The misdirection rendered the decisions of the Sessions Court, in convicting Adam Adli on the charge, and the High Court in upholding that decision, untenable, he said.
