Alcohol-related deaths rise to 37

KUALA LUMPUR: The latest number of deaths from toxic alcohol poisoning nationwide rose to 37 as of 10pm tonight, with 24 cases in Selangor, 10 in Kuala Lumpur and three in Perak.
In SHAH ALAM, the number of deaths from alcohol poisoning remained at 24 people as of 3pm, involving two Malaysians, Bangladesh (two), Nepal (eight), Myanmar (10), India (one) and an unknown individual.
The number of victims still receiving treatment remained at 18 while 16 had been discharged.
According to a Selangor police statement, there was a slight difference in the number of deaths recorded by the Ministry of Health Malaysia (MOH) following the death reports received by the Selangor police were from the victims' next-of-kin other than the hospital.
In IPOH, the number of deaths rose to three in the latest case involving local men aged between 33 and 40s, who died on Saturday morning.
Meanwhile, in SEREMBAN, blood test reports for the confirmation of whether two deaths cases received in the state were due to toxic alcohol poisoning or otherwise were expected tomorrow.
In the meantime, MOH, in a statement today, said the ministry had conducted checks on 589 premises selling liquor whereby 1,816 bottles of various brands of alcoholic beverages, including those brands that did not comply with the Food Act 1983 and Food Regulations 1985, were seized. — Bernama
