KUALA LUMPUR: Indah Water Konsortium Sdn Bhd (IWK) has adopted cutting-edge green technologies at the Pantai 2 Regional Sewage Treatment Plant (P2STP) to accommodate 1.42 million equivalent population.
Its chief executive officer, Faizal Othman, said the plant had adopted the country's first Advance Anaerobic-Anoxic-Oxic (Advance AAO) technology that benefited the environment and was more user-friendly.
"Among the advantages of this technology is the ability to treat and produce more quality effluents, efficiency in removing pollutants such as nitrogen and phosphorus, besides having a more stable operating system," he said during a P2STP media briefing here today.
Faizal said the plant also featured rainwater harvesting technology for cleaning purposes, and the use of bio-effluent (for landscape cleaning and irrigation purposes), as well as the use of biogas and solar panels (to generate electricity to support plant operation).
Faizal said a total of 140 small and less efficient sewage treatment plants were rationalised with the construction of the P2STP plant.
"The P2STP is an underground plant with 160 air diversion systems installed to provide a safe working environment, while a 12-hectare recreational park was built on top of the underground sewage treatment plant, comprising sports facilities such as a football field, futsal court and jogging track," said Faizal.
The construction of the P2STP plant commenced on July 27, 2011, and completed in July 2015, costing RM983 million.
Launched by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Abdul Razak in May this year, P2STP is the first underground treatment plant in Malaysia and the largest in Asia Pacific region. — Bernama
