Emulate Karpal Singh, says Guan Eng

GEORGE TOWN: Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng today called upon those who remembered the late parliamentarian Karpal Singh (pix) to emulate his example of being dedicated to the cause.

He said the former Bukit Gelugor MP was a defender of justice and of the principles of the Federal Constitution.

The DAP secretary general said Karpal, the former DAP national chairman, fought to ensure Malaysians could enjoy a country which was fair, free and just.

“He gave people the human dignity to live in peace and harmony as Malaysians,” he said in his speech in a ceremony to mark the third anniversary of the death of Karpal at the Wadda Gurdwara Sahib here.

The fame lawyer cum politician was killed in an accident just after midnight on April 17, 2014 at the North South Expressway (NSE) near Gua Tempurung.

Dubbed the "Tiger of Jelutong" by many, he retained his seat as Jelutong MP for five consecutive terms.

His reputation as one of the country's most prominent lawyer made him a familiar face in both the courtroom and in Parliament.

He had taken on many sensational cases during his profession, most notably he was the lead counsel for PKR defacto leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim in his sodomy trial.

His political career saw him being suspended from Parliament numerous times, charged for sedition, and detained under the Internal Security Act for allegedly inciting "racial tension" in 1987 and released in 1989.

Earlier in the ceremony, Penang Housing, Town and Country Planning Committee chairman Jagdeep Singh thanked the state government for recognising the legacy of his father.

He cited the naming of Persiaran Karpal Singh (a seafront promenade at Sungai Pinang), the Karpal Singh Learning Centre and Taman Pesiaran Karpal Singh as examples.

He said the family was happy with the recognition and described his father as one who fought for justice for the people.
Jagdeep also thanked his mother, Gurmit Kaur, who he described as the “rock” of the family following the passing of Karpal.
