Fake news can jeopardise national unity, says Malacca CM

JASIN: Malacca Chief Minister Datuk Seri Idris Haron has advised the people to be wary of fake news, especially that which went viral on the social media, saying it can jeopardise national unity.
He said the concept of unity, tolerance and cooperation among the races had enabled the government to plan and implement development smoothly to improve the standard of living of the people.
"Today, we face many crossroads with issues upon issues being spread, such as the collapse of the economy and social imbalance.
"These can lead to racial conflicts. In fact, the political instability caused by issues involving our leaders can scare the people.
"The widespread information available during the age of the social media, if accepted unquestioningly without verification, can threaten social harmony and destroy the nation," he said when speaking at the state-level Chinese New Year Open House at the Taman Maju field here last night.
The event was attended by Melaka Yang Dipertua Negeri Tun Dr Mohd Khalil Yaakob, Speaker of the Malacca Legislative Assembly Datuk Othman Muhamad, state executive councillors and more than 10,000 people from throughout the state. — Bernama
