A WOMAN, who survived a heart transplant seven years ago, died on Tuesday after giving birth to a healthy baby girl.
Megan Moss Johnson of Ferguson in St Luois, contracted a virus that led to myocarditis, or inflammation of the heart.
She recovered, but needed a transplant after developing congestive heart failure at the age of 23.
Johnson married musician Nathan Johnson and moved to Nashville, where she delivered Eilee Kate early Tuesday. She spent six hours with the baby before she lost consciousness.
Doctors have warned against pregnancies in the first year after a heart transplant. The risks to the mother are highest at this stage as changes in blood circulation and volume can lead to high blood pressure and blood clots.
