Man jailed for unlawful possession of machete in public

PETALING JAYA: A man with six children was sentenced to five years' jail by the sessions court here today for unlawful possession of a long machete in public.
Judge Azwarnida Affandi handed down the sentence on Mohd Nazrie Shambas Azami, 34, after the man changed his plea to guilty. He was ordered to serve the sentence from today.
Mohd Nazrie was charged with unlawful possession of the weapon at Jalan Persiaran Perdana, Seri Kembangan here at 3.30 pm on Oct 10 last year.
The charge, under Section 6(1) of the Corrosive and Explosive Substances and Offensive Weapons Act 1958, provides an imprisonment for up to 10 years , and with whipping, if found guilty.
In mitigation, Mohd Nazrie, who was unrepresented, said he regretted his action and that he was the sole family breadwinner.

Deputy public prosecutor Norazalina Razali, who prosecuted, requested for a punitive sentence as the accused had previous records..
In the same court, a former company driver, Mohd Rozi Zakaria, 43, was sentenced to two years' jail and fined RM4,000, in default six months jail, after he pleaded guilty to committing criminal breach of trust, involving RM8,000, belonging to the company.
He was ordered to serve the jail sentence from the date of his arrest on Sept 19 this year.
Mohd Rozi, then a driver at Unitedstar Corporation Sdn Bhd, was charged with CBT by dishonestly using the company's money amounting to RM8,333.39, which was entrusted to him.
The offence was committed at the company office at G30 & G32, Jalan PJU 1/45, Aman Suria Damansara here last Aug 3 and 4.
In mitigation, Mohd Rozi said he had just separated from his wife. — Bernama
