GEORGE TOWN: The Penang Malay Association (Pemenang) wants the newly-formed federal government under Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad to maintain the Penang Regional Development Authority (Perda).
Speaking to reporters, its president, Tan Sri Mohd Yusof Latiff, said Perda, which was formed back in 1983, was an agency to assist community development through several socio-economic projects specifically for the Malays on the mainland.
Mohd Yusof appealed to the Prime Minister and said he would also forward his plea to PKR de facto leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim on maintaining Perda.
During his tenure as deputy prime minister, Anwar was one of the leaders in charge of overseeing Perda.
"I have also written to the premier on this matter," Mohd Yusof said at a press conference today.
He said he would also write to Datuk Seri Mohd Shariff Omar, the deputy chairman of Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (PPBM), to convey the message.
Mohd Yusof said with regards to allegations of abuse of power and misappropriation, the perpetrators would be punished if there was evidence.
"I agree that action will be taken against all these issues if these allegations turn out to be true," he added.
The Penang government had previously lodged a report with the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) on the loss-making sale of a plot of land in Kampung Tok Keramat in Nibong Tebal.
