GEORGE TOWN: The state government welcomes public feedback on its proposal to limit the term of the chief minister.
In a press conference at Komtar today, Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said the legal advisor had proposed to the state government that a subclause be included in the existing clauses in the state's Constitution.
He said the term limitation as being proposed beforehand would be hard to define, while saying that the state legal advisor had come out with a proposal stating that the Chief Minister may not be appointed more than twice.
In a handout distributed to media, the subclause states that no member of the Legislative Assembly may be appointed as Chief Minister more than twice.
He, however, said the proposal was not finalised as he also wanted to hear the public's view on the matter.
"It could have many interpretations so we hope the people and civil society can channel their views to us," he said.
Chow added the amendment bill to the state Constitution could also be tabled in early August when the state legislative assembly convenes.
Penang Pakatan Harapan (PH) had in its election manifesto pledged to limit the term of Chief Minister to two terms.
During campaigning for the 14th general election, PH had mooted the idea of limiting the terms of prime minister, chief minister and mentri besar to two-terms if the pact captured Putrajaya.
