Penang PAS to contest 20 state and six parliamentary seats

    GEORGE TOWN: Penang PAS is likely to contest 20 state and six parliamentary seats for the 14th general election here, said its state elections director Bukhori Ghazali.
    The candidates will be unveiled by the party president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang during the launching of the third alternative movement - "Gagasan Sajahtera" at the state PAS headquarters in Pongsu Seribu in Kepala Batas on Sunday.
    "We are targetting 20 state and six parliament seats throughout the state," he said.
    The PAS president will be announcing candidates from its allies of Parti Ikatan, whose president is former Umno Supreme Council member Tan Sri Abdul Kadir Sheikh Fadzir, Parti Cinta Malaysia (PCM), whose outspoken leader is Datuk Huan Cheng Guan, formerly a Gerakan vice - president and several non-governmental organisations.
    Among the PAS leaders believed to be selected are state PAS commissioner Muhammad Fauzi Yusoff, state Youth wing head Afnan Hamimi Taib Azamudden and state PAS secretary Iszuree Ibrahim.
    In the last election, PAS only won the Permatang Pasir state seat under its former state PAS commissioner Datuk Mohd Salleh Man, who is likely to retire from politics.
    The Islamist party's main opponent is its splinter party - Parti Amanah Negara.
    Leading the charge would be the Youth wing's deputy head Muhammad Faiz, who may be fielded in Permatang Pasir, Azrul Mahathir who would likely be fielded in Bayan Lepas and its Youth head Saifullah Abdul Nasir, who is slated to contest the Sungai Dua state seat.
    The Permatang Pauh Amanah area head Dr Zaidi Zakaria will likely be fielded in the Kepala Batas parliamentary seat where he will likely face off against the incumbent Datuk Seri Reezal Merican Naina Merican.
    Penang Amanah chairperson Datuk Mujahid Yusuf Raza said that they will likely announce their candidates formally on April 13 in Desa Murni, Sungai Dua here.
