GEORGE TOWN: Police have made a breakthrough in the theft of a 91-year-old Sleeping Buddha statue with the arrest of a female suspect last night.
A police spokesperson confirmed the development and said police are now trying to trace the missing statue.
"We have someone in custody and we hope the person can lead us to the statue."
A couple was captured on CCTV stealing the statue from the Penang Buddhist Association at Jalan Anson here early last week.
The disappearance of the statue was only discovered almost 10 days later.
Northeast district police chief Assistant Commissioner Anuar Omar said that checks from the building's closed circuit television footage showed that a man and a woman had stolen the statue on Dec 11 at about 8am.
The footage also showed them carting away the statue by placing it in a bag before putting it in their car.
The Buddha statue, valued at RM10,000, was placed at the common hall on a table for prayers.
The case is being investigated under Section 379 of the Penal Code for theft.
