Root of problem in tree fall near KLCC (Updated)

PETALING JAYA: The fallen tree in Jalan Ampang, which led to the injury of two people today, was due to a decay in its roots, according to Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL).
The big tree fell in front of the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (KLCC) at 7.30am, injuring the couple while they were riding a motorcycle to work and causing a traffic jam along Jalan Ampang.
The casualties are Mira Ezva Abdul Rasid, 25, and Norazrul Ahmad, 37, the latter of which was still unconscious at the time of writing. They had just gotten married on Sunday.
Describing the incident as an unforeseen circumstance, DBKL said the decay could not be observed from the outside.
"The fallen tree was in a good condition physically. However, observation at the site after the incident has indicated that there was decay at its roots," it said in a statement.
"The decay had affected the growth at its roots, which caused the tree to become unstable and fall."
DBKL said the fallen tree was of the 'Hujan-hujan' species, a common type that could be found along Jalan Ampang, which is one of the oldest roads in the city. The tree itself was 130-years-old and had grown to a diameter of 4.65m.
According to DBKL, the trees along Jalan Ampang underwent regularly scheduled maintenance twice a year, the last two times being April and December last year.
DBKL also said that it was currently drafting a management plan for trees that are at risk of falling, with priority given to those located by the roadside.
It added that an arborist would be appointed to conduct a thorough inspection of the trees.
"Based on the result of the inspection, the arborist must provide recommendations on the trees' management," it added.
Meanwhile, according to Harian Metro, the victims Mira and Norazrul had just had their wedding reception in Cheras on Sunday night.
"It happened so fast – the tree in front of us fell suddenly. My husband could not brake in time and we crashed into it," Mira, a mall security guard, was quoted as saying.
When met at Hospital Kuala Lumpur, Mira said she was grateful to have survived the incident but was worried about her still-unconscious husband.
"This is the biggest challenge for us as we were married for barely one day," said Mira, who is mulling legal action.
"We were lucky we were not crushed by the tree or our fate would have been very different."
