GEORGE TOWN: Maverick Tanjung Bungah assemblyman Teh Yee Cheu (pix) who quit the DAP yesterday says he plans to contest in the Sungai Pinang state seat in the 14th General Election (GE14).
Teh who quit the DAP after 18 years, however declined to confirm if he would join another party.
Speaking during a packed press conference at his service centre here, Teh said he would make the announcement tomorrow on the party of his choice.
Teh said it was important to have a third voice in the state assembly and expressed hopes of bringing major changes to Sungai Pinang if elected.
Sungai Pinang is currently held by DAP's Lim Siew Khim.
Teh who joined DAP in 2000, has frequently crossed swords with Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng.
On hand to receive Teh's resignation letter was DAP's Bukit Bendera liaison committee secretary Lim Cheng Hoe.
Tan told the media that he will submit Teh's resignation letter and membership cards to state DAP chairman Chow Kon Yeow soon.
Teh said he choose to contest in Sungai Pinang and not Tanjung Bungah, because he did not want the DAP to accuse him of using his influence to win over voters in the area.
Previously the two-term Tanjung Bungah assemblyman said he would quit the party once Parliament was dissolved.
Teh had been at loggerheads with the state government over environmental issues such as hillslope developments, reclamation, and high-density mega projects.
