Deputy PM Fadillah confirms ASEAN Power Grid trade mechanisms and pricing are determined directly between participating countries without regional mandates
KUCHING: The trade mechanism and pricing details for the ASEAN Power Grid initiative are determined directly between the involved countries.
Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof confirmed there is no specific regional framework that ASEAN nations must follow for the power sharing project.
“We can sell energy via the APG,” he told reporters at the Malam Warisan Budaya Bangsa MADANI Berkhidmat event.
“That means between countries in ASEAN, we can share energy but there needs to be trade details.”
Fadillah highlighted the successful power integration project involving Laos, Thailand, Malaysia and Singapore as a working model.
“This concept can be used as an example,” he said, referring to the existing multilateral energy cooperation.
The Deputy Prime Minister emphasized that participating nations should determine their own trading arrangements and mechanisms.
He made these comments while attending the Misi Sukarelawan Siswa YSS-ASEAN Ke Sarawak 2025 dinner event.
The ASEAN Power Grid initiative aims to enhance regional energy security through cross-border electricity trading.
Fadillah’s remarks clarify that pricing and operational details remain bilateral matters between trading partners.
This approach allows flexibility while building on existing successful energy cooperation models within the region. – Bernama
