The Economic Census 2026 will cover 308,000 entities in Selangor, with services dominating at 84% and micro-businesses making up 74% of the total
SUNGAI BESAR: The Economic Census 2026 (BE2026) will survey approximately 308,000 business entities across Selangor.
The Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM) stated that micro entities constitute 74.1% of this total.
Small entities account for 24.6%, while large and medium-sized entities make up 4.7% and 1.5% respectively.
By economic sector, services dominate with an 83.8% share, representing 258,909 entities.
Construction follows at 8.6% (26,512 entities), with manufacturing third at 6.6% (20,343 entities).
Agriculture comprises 0.8% (2,454 entities), and mining and quarrying accounts for 0.2% (643 entities).
DOSM Chief Statistician Datuk Seri Dr Mohd Uzir Mahidin highlighted the business structure in the Sabak Bernam district.
He said the district is dominated by micro, small and medium enterprises, with the highest commercial activity in Sungai Besar and Sekinchan.
Preliminary records show Sabak Bernam has 213 informal-sector entities, including hawkers and small shops, plus 90 homestay operators.
Key local industries include food processing, particularly crisps and snack production around Sungai Besar, Parit Baru and Sekinchan.
“The local business ecosystem is also supported by a network of seven public markets housing 635 outlets,” Mohd Uzir said.
He added that this positions the district as an active centre for agricultural produce, seafood and agro-based products.
“The combination of formal and informal activities makes Sabak Bernam a significant area in BE2026,” he stated.
Mohd Uzir explained that BE2026 analysis will be compiled at a granular level by district and economic activity.
This enables deeper, localised economic analysis aligned with inclusive socio-economic development principles.
“The participation of all entities is crucial to ensure the data are accurate and reflect the economy’s diversity,” he emphasised.
Carrying the theme “Data, the Pulse of the People’s Economy”, BE2026 will run nationwide from February to October 2026.
It will cover all business entities and non-profit institutions across every economic sector in Malaysia. – Bernama
