PETALING JAYA: SumiSaujana Group Bhd – a manufacturer of specialty chemicals for the oil and gas industry – via wholly owned subsidiary SumiSaujana TCM Chemicals Sdn Bhd (SSTCM) has entered into a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Zhangjiagang CoolisT Life Technology Co Ltd (CoolisT Group), a China-based manufacturer of polyurethane-based products serving international furniture and bedding brands.
Under the MoU, both parties will collaborate in the joint development and commercialisation of plant-based polyols derived from renewable vegetable oils for use in polyurethane foam applications, particularly in furniture and bedding products.
The collaboration seeks to accelerate the global adoption of sustainable, bio-based chemical materials that meet international environmental and performance standards.
SSTCM, which acquired the exclusive rights to the proprietary biopolyol formulations for palm oil and mixed vegetable oils from the Malaysian Palm Oil Board (MPOB), will serve as the technical developer and manufacturer of the bio-based polyols, lead the research and development, pilot-scale trials, and certification processes.
CoolisT Group, leveraging its extensive manufacturing network and export markets in the United States and Europe, will provide technical input, conduct laboratory evaluations on developed polyols at its facilities, define requirements applicable to export markets. Upon successful validation and subject to mutually agreed supply terms, CoolisT Group may express its intent to commercially adopt the developed bio-polyols in its manufacturing operations.
SumiSaujana executive director/CEO Norazlam Norbi commented, “This collaboration represents a major step forward in our strategy to expand beyond the oil and gas specialty chemicals segment into high-growth, sustainable industrial applications. By combining SSTCM’s technical capabilities with CoolisT Group’s manufacturing expertise and international market access, we are positioning SumiSaujana at the forefront of bio-based innovation in polyurethane materials. This partnership not only supports our environmental, social and governance and sustainability goals but also opens a new growth avenue in the global circular economy.”
The collaboration will be guided by a joint technical working Group (JTWG) composed of representatives from both companies’ R&D, process and quality teams. The JTWG will oversee laboratory formulation, foam trials, and certification processes aligned with international environmental standards. Upon successful validation, SSTCM is expected to become the exclusive supplier of the developed biopolyol to CoolisT Group for its manufacturing operations, subject to the execution of a definitive supply agreement.
The MoU also supports SumiSaujana’s broader commitment to environmental, social and governance principles and Malaysia’s bio-based economy agenda. SSTCM may collaborate with local research institutions such as the MPOB to enhance technical validation, certification, and traceability standards.
