KUALA LUMPUR: A total of 80 outcome documents were adopted during the 47th ASEAN Summit held from October 26 to 28.
Prime Minister’s senior press secretary Tunku Nashrul Abaidah said the documents included joint statements between ASEAN leaders and their counterparts from the United States, Japan, India, New Zealand and Australia.
He stated the outcomes also stemmed from the ASEAN+3 Summit, the East Asia Summit, the Asia Zero Emission Community Leaders’ Meeting, and the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership Summit.
Timor-Leste was formally admitted as a full member of ASEAN following its application for membership in 2011.
Another significant achievement was the signing of the Kuala Lumpur Peace Accord between Thailand and Cambodia.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and United States President Donald Trump witnessed the accord.
Tunku Nashrul said this accord reflects Malaysia’s steadfast commitment to facilitating regional disputes through peaceful means.
Malaysia also expressed appreciation to the US for its role in supporting dialogue and consensus-building.
On the economic front, the summit concluded two significant trade initiatives.
These were the upgraded ASEAN Trade in Goods Agreement and the ASEAN-China Free Trade Agreement 3.0.
ASEAN leaders reaffirmed the Five-Point Consensus as the key reference for addressing the situation in Myanmar.
They urged its full implementation, particularly in halting violence and enhancing humanitarian assistance.
Leaders also exchanged views on the South China Sea and Palestine issues.
Malaysia reiterated its unwavering support for peace and efforts to address transnational crimes.
Tunku Nashrul noted Malaysia fully supports the Philippines as it prepares to assume the ASEAN Chairmanship in 2026. – Bernama
