Brazilian President Lula da Silva supports Malaysia’s full BRICS membership during ASEAN Summit visit, praising Malaysian hospitality and trade potential.

KUALA LUMPUR: Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has voiced strong support for Malaysia’s aspiration to become a full member of the BRICS bloc.

He described Malaysia as a natural partner with shared values and growing economic potential during his inaugural visit to Malaysia for the 47th ASEAN Summit.

“Malaysia will have the support of Brazil to become a full member of BRICS,” he told a press conference on Monday.

On October 24, Malaysia was recognised as one of 13 nations officially added to BRICS as a partner country.

BRICS originally stood for Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa and collectively accounts for one-fifth of global trade.

The Brazilian leader, who celebrated his 80th birthday during his visit, spoke warmly about his first trip to Malaysia.

He praised the hospitality he received from the Malaysian people and leadership under Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

“I must say, I am leaving Malaysia with the most positive impression possible,” Lula said.

“First of all the warmth and friendliness of the Malaysian people. Everywhere I go, it feels like I already know everyone.”

He noted similarities between Malaysian and Brazilian people in their warmth and friendliness.

Lula called on Brazilian businesses and government leaders to act with greater boldness in pursuing trade opportunities with Malaysia.

He said trade between Brazil and Malaysia as well as Indonesia currently stands at about USD 12 billion.

Lula described this figure as modest when compared to the economic strength and potential of the nations involved.

“There is a lack of boldness among our entrepreneurs and ministers,” he added.

“Instead of staying home, they must travel the world to sell what Brazil produces.” – Bernama
