Tamil actor Abhinay Kinger, known for debut in Thulluvadho Ilamai with Dhanush, dies at 44 from liver disease
TAMIL and Malayalam actor Abhinay Kinger, who made his memorable debut alongside Dhanush in the 2002 film Thulluvadho Ilamai, passed away on Monday (November 10) at the age of 44. His death has sent shockwaves through the South Indian film industry.
According to India Today, the actor succumbed to liver disease early Monday morning around 4am (IST) in Chennai after battling the illness for several years. Despite his deteriorating health, he remained connected to his fans and continued working in the industry until his condition worsened.
A Career Built on Versatility
Abhinay made his acting debut in Kasthuri Raja’s Thulluvadho Ilamai (2002), which also marked Dhanush’s entry into cinema. The film’s success led him to take on lead roles in movies like Junction (2002), Singara Chennai (2004), and Pon Megalai (2005).
By the late 2000s, he transitioned to supporting roles, appearing in films such as Solla Solla Inikkum (2009) and Palaivana Solai (2009). Abhinay also worked as a dubbing artist, notably providing the voice for Vidyut Jammwal in the blockbuster films Thuppakki (2012) and Anjaan (2014).
Throughout his career, he accumulated over 15 film credits across Tamil and Malayalam cinema, showcasing his range as both an actor and voice artist.
Financial Struggles and Industry Support
Abhinay is the son of National Award-winning actress T.P. Radhamani, remembered for her role in the Malayalam film Uttarayanam (1975). She passed away in 2019 after a battle with cancer.
Following his mother’s death, Abhinay’s financial situation deteriorated significantly. In an interview last year, he revealed that he was struggling financially and was surviving on meals from a government mess.
As his medical expenses mounted due to his liver condition, he made public appeals for financial assistance. Comedian KPY Bala responded by providing Rs 1 lakh (RM4,705) in financial support. Actor Dhanush, his co-star from his debut film, reportedly contributed Rs 5 lakh (RM23,525) towards his treatment.
Actor Vijay Sethupathi was also noted as one of the few who visited Abhinay after his mother’s death and helped with her cancer treatment.
In one of his last public appearances, he attended a film press conference in Chennai several weeks ago, where he spoke candidly about his health challenges and uncertain future.
Final Arrangements
His body is currently at his house in Rangarajapuram, Chennai. The owner of Abhinay’s house initially prevented visitors from paying their respects, but the matter was later resolved amicably.
Representatives from the Nadigar Sangam (South Indian Artistes’ Association) have been contacted to assist with funeral arrangements, as the actor reportedly had limited family support for the last rites.
A Legacy Remembered
Abhinay leaves behind a body of work that showcased his dedication to South Indian cinema. From his breakthrough role opposite Dhanush to his work as a dubbing artist for major productions, he contributed to the industry across multiple dimensions.
His passing marks a significant loss for Tamil and Malayalam cinema, with colleagues and fans remembering him for his talent, humility, and perseverance through personal and health challenges.
The actor’s journey—from a promising debut to struggling with illness while seeking support from the very industry he served—has resonated deeply with audiences and industry professionals alike.
