M’sian woman allegedly almost scammed after being offered three-month phone bill waiver

A Malaysian woman warns of a scam offering a three-month phone bill waiver, urging people never to share OTP codes and verify with telcos.

A Malaysian woman recently revealed what she claimed to be a new scam tactic that she almost fell for after being offered a three-month phone bill waiver.

Taking to Threads, she also alleged that the scammers had impersonated a major local telecommunications company.

The woman realised that the offer was a scam when the alleged scammer said they would send her an OTP code from the telecommunications company for verification.

“I already felt that it was odd because how can anyone share an OTP code? This is probably their new modus operandi.

“I was quite excited thinking I would get three months off my phone bill – luckily I did not share anything,” she wrote in her post.

She reiterated the reminder to never share one’s OTP code.

Netizens also shared that they had allegedly been targeted in a similar manner.

“Yes. This is their new tactic. I received the same call last month, but I knew it was a scam because my relative went through the same thing. Their bill shot up to RM300 after sharing the OTP code,” one user claimed.

However, another user said that it was not a new tactic, as they had experienced the same incident last year and again this year, about two or three times.

Some users also reminded others to always verify any information with the telecommunications company before taking action.
