Car salesman slams RM1.7k earners buying expensive cars

Salesman warns Gen Z earning RM1.7k against high car loans like Mazda 3, citing financial hardship

A local car salesman recently reminded the younger generation to “wake up and smell the coffee” regarding the issue of applying for expensive car loans while earning less than RM2,000 a month.

“To all the Gen Z out there, I just want to remind you — if you’re only earning RM1,700, you cannot submit a loan for a Mazda 3,” he said in a viral TikTok video.

He also highlighted the harsh reality of trying to maintain such a loan, explaining that with such high monthly payments, they would struggle to survive the rest of the month due to other financial commitments.

“Later, they will come and tell me, ‘My salary is RM1,700 — monthly payments for the Mazda 3 are only RM1,200. I have RM500 left.’ It’s not possible,” he added.

He further explained his point by breaking down the figures after EPF deductions, noting that RM1,700 becomes approximately RM1,500.

“If the monthly rate for the Mazda is RM1,200, you would only have RM300 left. After that, what are you going to eat?” he said.

Not wanting to discourage young adults from aspiring to own their dream vehicles, he advised them instead to keep working hard, assuring them that one day they would be able to afford such cars.

The salesman’s message resonated with many, who reflected on their own experiences of car ownership and its true costs.

“I earn between RM3,000 and RM4,000 and I’m already having a headache paying off my Perodua Bezza,” one user said.

“Even though I earn RM6,000, I can only afford to pay below RM1,000 a month for my car. I also have to think about servicing, insurance and tires — everything is expensive,” another noted.
