Rapper voluntarily surrenders at Dang Wangi HQ for remand as police reclassify case as murder investigation.
LOCAL rap artist Wee Meng Chee, better known as Namewee, voluntarily surrendered at the Dang Wangi district police headquarters (IPD) early this morning to assist in the investigation into the death of Taiwanese influencer Hsieh Yun Hsin at a hotel on Jalan Conlay last month.
Dang Wangi district police chief ACP Sazalee Adam confirmed the development, stating that a remand application for the suspect would be filed this morning.
“For your information, Namewee will be remanded this morning,” he said briefly to Bernama.
The 42-year-old musician reportedly arrived at the Dang Wangi IPD in the early hours after travelling from Johor Bahru to provide his statement regarding the death of the Taiwanese influencer, whose body was discovered in a hotel bathroom on October 22.
In a Facebook post, Namewee stated that he appeared voluntarily and was prepared to provide full cooperation to the police to clarify the true circumstances to the public and the victim’s family.
“I will not run away. Previously, in the seven times I was called by the authorities, I appeared voluntarily to give my statement. I have never fled,” he wrote.
Yesterday, Kuala Lumpur police chief Datuk Fadil Marsus confirmed that the case, initially classified as a sudden death report (SDR), is now being reinvestigated as a murder case under Section 302 of the Penal Code.
He stated that investigation findings revealed the musician was the last individual with the victim and is considered crucial in assisting the investigation.
Hsieh’s body was reportedly discovered by the musician in the bathtub at 1.40pm on October 22 before being taken to Kuala Lumpur Hospital (HKL) for post-mortem examination.
In the same investigation, the musician was also arrested for possession and use of drugs after police found nine blue pills suspected to be ecstasy weighing 5.12 grams in the hotel room.
He was subsequently charged at the Kuala Lumpur Court on 24 October with drug-related offences and is currently out on bail.
Police are still awaiting the complete post-mortem and toxicology analysis reports to determine the actual cause of death of the 33-year-old woman.
