Sabahan nearly charged RM1.4k for RM5 parking fee in KK

Man avoids massive overcharge after payment machine shows RM1,469 instead of RM5 at Kota Kinabalu car park.

A Sabahan man has alleged that he was nearly overcharged by more than RM1,000 at a parking booth.

In a Facebook post, the man claimed that the parking ticket machine showed a total fare of only RM5 after scanning his licence plate. The incident is said to have taken place in Kota Kinabalu.

However, he was taken aback when the payment machine allegedly displayed an exorbitant charge of RM1,469.

“Luckily, I did not tap my card. If I had, I can guarantee that I would have lost more than RM1,000 and would have had to lodge a report and request a refund,” he remarked.

The man then reversed his car and proceeded to another exit. Initially, he encountered some difficulty as his licence plate could not be scanned, but after the issue was resolved, he managed to pay the RM5 fee and exit the premises.

The incident serves as a sobering reminder for motorists to always check the total amount before making any payment, whether at parking bays or other payment counters.

Netizens also advised using a separate payment account for small transactions to avoid such situations.

“I could never use my bank card to pay for parking. I always use my Touch ’n Go card. If the machine charges thousands, that won’t happen because my TnG card only has a limited balance,” one user commented.

Another commenter alleged that a friend experienced a similar incident in which RM70 was deducted from their bank account instead of the original RM5 fee. Despite reporting the issue, the friend allegedly did not receive a refund.
