Bintulu port: Several sectors set to be vital contributors to port development

KUALA LUMPUR: According to Bintulu Port Holdings Bhd (BPHB), several sectors will significantly contribute to port operations and development, including methanol plant operations in Kidurong, biomass exports, increased handling of roll-on/roll-off vessels (RORO), cement, and coal.

In its 28th annual general meeting today, the company shared that its cargo handling reached 48.77 million tonnes in 2023 and the number of vessel calls amounted to 7,708 in 2023 from 7,505 in 2022, surpassing targets by 102 per cent.

It said the effective management and operation led to a revenue increase of RM821.64 million in 2023 from RM819.79 million in 2022, with a post-tax profit of RM125.06 million.

“The positive growth was propelled by developments in various industries, particularly the oil and gas sector, marine activities, and RORO operations,” it said in a statement today.

Sarawak State Secretary and BPHB chairman Datuk Amar Mohamad Abu Bakar Marzuki, in announcing the group’s integrated annual report for 2023, said the group demonstrated resilience, adaptability, and commitment to excellence despite various challenges.

Meanwhile, BPHB group chief executive officer Ruslan Abdul Ghani revealed the company’s three-pronged strategy, namely enhancing “Core Port Business”, exploring “Beyond Port Business”, and moving into the “Low Carbon and Clean Energy” space.

He also introduced a new corporate culture focusing on customer-centric, solution-focused, step-up, result-minded, and value-driven.

According to the statement, Bintulu Port continuously play a vital role in serving as a key export gateway for the oil and gas industry.

Bintulu Port is poised to become a hub for biomass, petrochemicals, and green energy sources in line with the Sarawak state government’s clean energy agenda, it addded.
