JAKARTA: Gojek, a motorcycle-based transportation service provider which operates in five countries - Indonesia, Singapore, Vietnam, Thailand and the Philippines - is also suitable for Malaysia, according to Malaysian Ambassador to Indonesia, Zainal Abidin Bakar.

He said, however, the safety of those using the service should be of utmost importance.

“Having served (as an ambassador) in Indonesia, I think Gojek is very effective, and can be applied in Malaysia.

“(However) the safety issue is a concern in Malaysia, and some matters relating to accidents and insurance need to be addressed by the authorities,“ he told Bernama.

Zainal Abidin, 58, was officially appointed as the Malaysian Ambassador to Indonesia by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah on March 21.

Yesterday, Gojek’s rider-partners threatened to hold a demonstration at the Malaysian Embassy in Jakarta, in protest over an alleged insult to the profession by the founder and adviser of a Malaysian taxi company.

The businessman, Datuk Shamsubaharin Ismail, today issued an open apology to the Indonesian providers and users of the Gojek service for having labelled them as poor. — Bernama
