BALIK PULAU: Police today arrested a foreign national, suspected to have impersonated as a police officer, to extort and rob foreign workers in the Southwest district, here.
Southwest district deputy police chief DSP Jafri Md Zain said the 16-year-old teenager was arrested around 12.25 am earlier today in front of a car wash in Gelugor, near here, as a result of police surveillance.
Police were informed by a recently arrived Myanmar worker who had encountered the teenager posing as a police officer, demanding the victim’s passport during an incident in Bayan Baru.
“The suspect also punched the face of the foreign male before the victim fled after seeing a knife in the teenager’s motorcycle basket out of fear of being harmed,“ he said when contacted by Bernama today.
He said based on investigations, the teenager was involved in at least three cases of impersonating a police officer and extorting victims, two cases in the Southwest district and one case in the Northeast district.
He said police also seized a sling bag, a knife, gloves, a Honda motorcycle, a mobile phone and RM35 in coins following the teenager’s arrest.
The teenager, who holds a United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) card, would be remanded for six days until May 5 to assist investigations, and the case is being investigated under Sections 394 and 170 of the Penal Code.
