KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia intends to join the Global Coalition for Social Justice at the 114th International Labour Conference next year.

Human Resources Minister Steven Sim Chee Keong revealed this during a meeting with International Labour Organization Director-General Gilbert F. Houngbo.

The meeting took place during a luncheon in the capital city today.

The Global Coalition for Social Justice is an ILO initiative established in 2023 to strengthen global efforts toward universal social justice.

Malaysia’s participation demonstrates the country’s commitment to protecting workers’ rights and expanding social protection nets.

This move also supports the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals according to the ministry’s statement.

Government, worker and employer representatives attended the meeting alongside the minister.

Malaysian Employers’ Federation president Datuk Dr Syed Hussain Syed Husman was among the attendees.

Malaysian Trades Union Congress president Datuk Abdul Halim Mansor also participated in the meeting.

Congress of Unions of Employees in the Public Service deputy secretary-general Mohd Zool Asmani Mahmood joined the gathering.

KESUMA International Division secretary Raja Mohd Nizam Raja Kamarulbahrin was also present.

This marked Gilbert F. Houngbo’s first official visit to Malaysia.

The meeting proceeded smoothly in a spirit of openness and friendship.

Malaysia-ILO relations have long been built upon this foundation of cooperation.

Gilbert is scheduled to attend the Global Skills Forum organised by HRD Corp on October 22.

The forum is expected to be an important platform for strengthening regional cooperation.

It will focus on skills development and future jobs according to the ministry’s announcement. – Bernama
