ASEAN and US to adopt joint vision statement for stronger partnership

KUALA LUMPUR: ASEAN and the United States will adopt the ASEAN-US Joint Vision Statement to promote a stronger, safer and more prosperous future for both regions.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, as ASEAN Chair this year, said the statement reflects both sides’ resolve to turn cooperation into concrete outcomes that deliver tangible benefits for the people.

He stated that ASEAN-US relations have deepened into a comprehensive strategic partnership grounded in shared aspirations for peace and prosperity.

Anwar highlighted the vibrant and tremendous economies of the US and Southeast Asia as having the potential to create a golden age for all nations.

He noted that two-way trade between ASEAN and the US reached a record of 453 billion US dollars last year, supporting millions of jobs and businesses across both regions.

The Prime Minister declared that today’s summit would make the promise of the ASEAN-US relationship even greater.

Present at the summit were US President Donald Trump and ASEAN leaders.

In his speech, Anwar welcomed Trump’s comprehensive plan to end the Gaza conflict.

He said the plan has given the world a glimmer of hope that even in the most intractable conflicts, diplomacy and determination can prevail.

Anwar expressed trust that with Trump’s leadership, a just and durable peace would be achieved.

Meanwhile, Anwar also conveyed ASEAN’s deep appreciation for Trump’s vital role in facilitating the KL Peace Accord between Thailand and Cambodia.

He said the signing of the agreement was undoubtedly an achievement that reflects the strong political will of both nations’ leaders and their people.

Earlier, Anwar and Trump witnessed the signing of the peace agreement by Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul and Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet.

The signing occurred on the sidelines of the 47th ASEAN Summit, which officially commenced today. – Bernama
