ASEAN leaders’ spouses foster regional friendship through cultural diplomacy

KUALA LUMPUR: Spouses of regional and dialogue partner leaders play a unique and influential role in strengthening ties within the wider ASEAN family.

Prime Minister’s wife Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail described spouses as acting as soft diplomats who nurture enduring friendships that complement formal engagements.

She noted that Malaysia’s ASEAN Chairmanship theme of inclusivity and sustainability was reflected in the spouse programme through cultural exchanges and shared experiences.

Dr Wan Azizah welcomed spouses from South Korea, the Philippines, New Zealand, Canada, Laos, Cambodia, Singapore and Thailand at Carcosa Seri Negara.

The programme featured an exhibition showcasing Malaysia’s rich cultural heritage and longstanding commitment to conservation.

Guests viewed miniature displays depicting ASEAN people and traditional cuisines alongside models of Malaysia’s Intangible Cultural Heritage.

The Malaysia Kebaya Showcase presented five traditional kebaya styles from different states across the country.

An ASEAN Shared Intangible Cultural Heritage segment featured five exquisite kebaya designs representing Malaysia, Indonesia, Brunei, Singapore and Thailand.

Each piece was crafted by renowned local designer Lim Yu Lin with motifs representing the unique identity of these five nations.

The event included a live demonstration of beaded shoe embroidery by local artisan Ong Bee Hong.

Spouses participated in a terrarium-making activity guided by local curators as a symbolic creation of nature and creativity.

The programme concluded with a luncheon where guests savoured Malaysian favourites including keropok lekor, apam balik and satay.

Minister of Women, Family and Community Development Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri said the spouses were very happy to participate in activities together.

She noted that learning about Malaysia’s unique heritage revealed shared cultural roots with other ASEAN nations.

Nancy described the programme as a meaningful celebration of culture, unity and friendship reflecting Malaysia’s warmth and hospitality.

She emphasized that common cultural foundations make ASEAN truly a peaceful and harmonious family. – Bernama
