Thai morgue overflows as flood death toll hits 55

SONGKHLA: The main morgue receiving flood victims in southern Thailand has exceeded its capacity, forcing authorities to deploy refrigerated trucks.

Songkhla Hospital required three refrigerated lorries after its morgue became full, a hospital staffer confirmed on Friday.

“The morgue has exceeded its capacity, so we need more,” said Charn, a morgue official who only gave his first name.

Footage showed the white refrigerated trucks parked outside the hospital’s main building.

The death toll from devastating flooding in southern Thailand has risen to 55 people.

The Thai government announced the updated casualty figure late Thursday, a significant increase from just six deaths reported the previous day.

Severe flooding has overwhelmed the region this week, particularly affecting Hat Yai near the Malaysian border.

Large areas of Hat Yai remained submerged, forcing residents to seek safety on rooftops.

In response to the crisis, the government suspended the Hat Yai district chief on Friday.

The suspension followed allegations of failure to adequately respond to the flooding emergency. – AFP
