Netflix’s live-action Avatar series returns June 25 with Toph, Azula and the Earth Kingdom arc

NETFLIX has released the trailer for Avatar: The Last Airbender season two, with the live-action series set to return on
June 25.

The new season continues Aang’s journey after the events of season one, which ended with the Northern Water Tribe surviving an attack by the Fire Nation while Princess Azula conquered Omashu.

Season two follows Aang, Katara and Sokka as they travel to Ba Sing Se, the walled capital of the Earth Kingdom, in hopes of convincing the Earth King to join the fight against Fire Lord Ozai.

The live-action series reimagines the Nickelodeon animated classic for a new generation of viewers. Avatar

The journey also introduces Toph, played by Miya Cech, a young earthbending master who becomes Aang’s teacher as he begins learning another element.

Gordon Cormier returns as Aang, with Kiawentiio as Katara, Ian Ousley as Sokka, Dallas Liu as Zuko, Elizabeth Yu as Azula, Paul Sun-Hyung Lee as Iroh and Daniel Dae Kim as Fire Lord Ozai.

New cast members include Chin Han as Long Feng, Hoa Xuande as Professor Zei, Justin Chien as King Kuei, Amanda Zhou as Joo Dee, Crystal Yu as Lady Beifong, Kelemete Misipeka as The Boulder, Lourdes Faberes as General Sung, Rekha Sharma as Amita, Terry Chen as Jeong Jeong, Dolly de Leon as Lo and Li, Lily Gao as Ursa, Madison Hu as Fei and Dichen Lachman as Yangchen.

Executive producers Christine Boylan and Jabbar Raisani said the second season will expand on the character relationships and bring several scenes from the animated series into live action.

“We’re looking forward to working with all of our actors again and digging into the deeper, more complicated relationships that develop as their journey continues in Season 2. We are going to show the real-world versions of iconic scenes from the original, and explore some of the stories that the animation didn’t. Mainly, we’re looking forward to seeing our gang all together again.”

The second season is expected to cover key Earth Kingdom storylines from the original animated series, including Ba Sing Se and Aang’s earthbending training.

Cormier said the new element brings a different physical approach compared with airbending.

“Airbending comes from bagua and wushu, [which are] really flowy, smooth, and very similar to tai chi, actually. But earthbending comes from Hung Ga kung fu, which is really aggressive. Low stances, powerful moves, and stuff like that. It’s quite a nice change, actually. It’s really stompy and kicky and punchy rather than flowy and airbendy.”

The series was renewed for seasons two and three in March 2024. The third season will conclude the story and has already wrapped filming.

Avatar: The Last Airbender season two premieres June 25 on Netflix.
