E-hailing drivers welcome the maximum 800L BUDI95 petrol quota increase; group urges fairness for all gig workers

KUALA LUMPUR: The Gabungan E-Hailing Malaysia (GEM) has welcomed the government’s decision to raise the BUDI95 petrol subsidy limit for e-hailing drivers from 600 litres to 800 litres per month, describing it as a bold and timely move.

Its chief activist Jose Rizal said the announcement showed that the government was listening to the voices of the e-hailing community and recognising their crucial role in driving the people’s economy.

“The decision reflects the government’s commitment to social justice and the well-being of working Malaysians.

“However, we urge that the implementation of BUDI95 continue to be refined to ensure fairness and inclusivity.

“This includes giving attention and flexibility to drivers who were left out, and reviewing the eligibility criteria to better reflect real conditions on the ground,” he said.

Jose also called on the government to extend similar consideration to food and parcel delivery workers, who face equally high fuel costs and play an essential role in Malaysia’s digital and on-demand economy.

“GEM remains committed to working closely with the government and all stakeholders to ensure that the BUDI95 subsidy is implemented transparently, inclusively, and delivers real benefits to all gig workers under the broader framework of the Madani Economy,” he said.

Earlier today, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced in Parliament that the government had agreed to increase the monthly fuel subsidy quota for active e-hailing drivers under the BUDI95 programme from 600 litres to 800 litres.

He said the move followed feedback from the industry and was aimed at easing the financial burden of those who rely on their vehicles for work.
