Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu said the government’s Rahmah initiatives such as Payung Rahmah, Menu Rahmah and Kedai Rahmah embody the late Amanah deputy president’s principle of governance rooted in love and care for the rakyat.

SHAH ALAM: The unity government is committed to continue the legacy of the late Datuk Seri Salahuddin Ayub through the compassionate Rahmah policies that prioritise the wellbeing of the people, said Agriculture and Food Security Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu.

In his keynote address during Amanah 10th Convention in Shah Alam today, Mohamad, better known as Mat Sabu, said the government’s Rahmah initiatives such as Payung Rahmah, Menu Rahmah and Kedai Rahmah embody the late Amanah deputy president’s principle of governance rooted in love and care for the rakyat.

“The legacy of the late Salahuddin Ayub lives on. His name remains cherished because his struggle was founded on compassion for the people. The Rahmah agenda continues because it reflects the essence of Islam, mercy and service to humanity,” said Mohamad,

He said these initiatives, along with targeted financial assistance such as the Sumbangan Asas Rahmah (Sara), Sumbangan Tunai Rahmah (STR), and the e-Kasih system, prove that the Madani government is not built on rhetoric but on action.

Mohamad said one of the government’s most significant achievements under the Madani framework was its courage to implement tough but necessary reforms, particularly in restructuring the country’s subsidy system.

“The government has dared to tackle issues others have long avoided, the reform of subsidies. We know that this decision is bitter, but like medicine, its purpose is to heal,” he said.

He said that the rationalisation of subsidies for diesel, chicken, and eggs ensures that only eligible Malaysians benefit from government aid.

“As a result, nearly RM6 billion in annual savings can now be channelled towards targeted assistance programmes such as Sara and STR.”

He acknowledged that while Malaysia had spent trillions of ringgit on subsidies since independence, widespread leakages and inefficiencies had stunted economic growth.

Touching on poverty eradication efforts, Mohamad said the government’s policies have brought Malaysia closer than ever to ending hardcore poverty.

“We have almost eradicated hardcore poverty from 0.2% down to 0.09%. God willing, during the first term of the Madani Government, there will no longer be any Malaysian left hungry or living in darkness.”

Salahuddin who was also Pulai MP, served as the Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Minister. He passed away in 2023, at the age of 61.
