Iran and US to hold nuclear talks in Oman on Friday

Indirect nuclear negotiations between Iran and the US are scheduled for Friday in Muscat, focusing on sanctions relief and the nuclear deal.

TEHRAN: Indirect nuclear negotiations between Iran and the United States are scheduled for Friday in Muscat, Oman.

Iranian media reported the talks will be strictly limited to the nuclear issue and the lifting of sanctions on Iran.

Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi will head the Iranian delegation, which includes senior diplomats Majid Takht-Ravanchi and Kazem Gharibabadi.

US envoy Steve Witkoff will represent Washington, with reports suggesting President Donald Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner may also attend.

Tehran has consistently stressed that talks should focus solely on the nuclear issue, rejecting negotiations over its missile programme or defence capabilities.

Araghchi and Witkoff led five rounds of talks last year before a planned sixth round was derailed by an Israeli bombing campaign that triggered a 12-day war.

The upcoming talks occur amid heightened regional tensions, with the US recently deploying an aircraft carrier group to the Middle East.

This deployment followed a crackdown on anti-government protests in Iran, which authorities said began peacefully before turning into “riots”.

Tehran has acknowledged more than 3,000 deaths during the unrest, blaming the violence on the US and Israel.

The US-based Human Rights Activists News Agency claims it has confirmed 6,872 deaths, mostly protesters killed by security forces.

Other rights groups warn the actual death toll is likely far higher.
