Police recorded 120 fatal accidents from 2023 to June 2026 due to DUI of drugs and alcohol, seeking stricter penalties.
KUALA LUMPUR: A total of 120 fatal accidents were recorded nationwide from 2023 to June 2026, caused by drivers under the influence (DUI) of drugs and alcohol, said police.
Bukit Aman Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department (JSPT) director Datuk Seri Muhammed Hasbullah Ali said 94 of those were caused by drugs and 26 by alcohol.
To address the issue, the JSPT intends to discuss with the Ministry of Transport and the Attorney-General’s Chambers to propose stricter penalties and raise awareness.
“The public seems undeterred and considers this matter trivial, whereas the risk of accidents affecting innocent road users is very high,” he said at a press conference.
From January to June 2026, 1,634 Op Mabuk (drunk driving operations) were carried out nationwide, an increase of 136.1% compared to 692 operations in the same period in 2025. A total of 949 arrests were recorded, up from 930 last year.
Kuala Lumpur recorded the highest arrests with 268, followed by Johor (223), Selangor (182), Sabah (95) and Sarawak (62). The majority of those detained were men (94.3%), and those aged 31 and above contributed nearly three-quarters of arrests.
Under Section 45A of the Road Transport Act 1987, 1,040 investigation papers were opened from January to June 2026, compared to 870 last year. Cases prosecuted in court increased to 589 from 486, and 414 cases involved sentencing compared to 334.
Muhammed Hasbullah said the JSPT will continue to intensify Op Mabuk nationwide without compromising on any individual who violates the law. “Strict actions will continue to be taken to ensure the safety of all road users and to reduce accidents and loss of life due to driving under the influence of alcohol,” he added.
